In a world where web 2.0 companies invent great new products and services (Photoways being one of them), there's a company doing just great out of a very old and classical product : Mattel ! Company reported its earnings on monday, topping analysts consensus, pushing Mattel shares to the highest in 3 years.
Key reason for this performance : the boost in Barbie dolls, which picked up for the 1st time in many years !
10 years ago, when I wanted to leave PepsiCo to start something on my own, I was looking for old brick&mortar businesses just riped for reinvention thanks to modern technologies, a more professional approach, a true customer-centric mindset, etc.
It's still the same story today, but I will this time focus on e-commerce : it's a fantastic opportunity to reinvent the distribution of traditional goods, in all sectors. You don't really innovate on the products themselves but on how you sell them to the masses.
I yesterday morning had breakfast with a friend of mine, a top M&A banker in Paris who happened to sell me several companies 15 years ago when I was supervising the business development of the Dole Food company in Europe. I could remember the great times I then had in the production and distribution of fresh produces. I'm definetly not a web geek, only tangible physical products do really appeal to me !
So, don't expect me to open an e-commerce business selling intangible services or goods ! I need to touch and feel what I sell !
