Over the years, Amazon has added lots of new categories on its website to become a kind on internet general merchandise store. On the US Amazon website, there are now 36 different retail categories.
But Jeff Bezos' company now comes with a brand new initiative with a stand alone website dubbed endless.com, targetted at shoes and handbags, a category Amazon was already selling on its main site.
Category dedicated, upmarket, free overnight shipping, etc, hey I get the impression that Amazon has read my post about internet category-killers !
I strongly believe in those ones, they represent the future of e-commerce ! Like in the brick&mortar retail, there are general merchants and there are category-killers. In France, the Mulliez family has expanded from the original hypermarket concept "Auchan" with a a series of category-killer businesses in apparel (Kiabi), sporting goods (Decathlon), rental professional tools (Kiloutou), car centers (Norauto), carpets & rugs (St Maclou), household appliances (Boulanger), etc...
It shall be interested to follow up the progress of Endless.com vs category leader Zappos or Barry Diller IAC's Shoebuy ?
Anyway, my Internet prediction for 2007 is that we will see many category-killer websites emerging, coming from independent initiatives, internet general merchants or brick&mortar category killers wanting to open/strenghten a key new channel.
Bonjour,

Zappos would be the winner for sure! Zappos have a great value for their customers and great product too. Just like myself when i bought my zappos shoes from http://www.thehotshoestore.com, i really like the way they serve me and i love the shoes too.
