E-Commerce Conversion Rates : Apparel Segment !
So, now that I'm a proud owner of an apparel e-commerce website (Bebeo), I have devoted some research into this segment.
In Europe, hard to look at the apparel segment without mentioning Yoox, the Italian online fashion website backed by iconic VC Benchmark Capital and whose sales should exceed €100M this year.
I digged into the US version of Yoox and discovered some interesting info :
- Average ticket is an astounding $300 !
- Conversion rate however is a meager 0,2%.
Is the latter good or bad ? No one can say and this just shows how meaningless this metric is without having the big picture. For sure, fashion attracts flocks of visitors, but as for brick&mortar window shopping, relatively fewer people will transact.
In the contrary, just take 2 other apparel websites in specific sub-sgements : Discountdance which offers apparel for the "serious dancer" and Bridesave, world's leading online wedding apparel destination. Their conversion rates are respectively around 4% and 6% !
Bridesave attracts around 200,000 unique visitors per month, less than a tenth of what Yoox US does, but nonetheless generates 4 times higher sales (a very decent $80M+ expected in 2006) !
Being really and totally obsessed by sales numbers, not traffic for itself, is a pre-requisite for serious e-commerce managers. And this again is not different from the brick&mortar world. You couldn't imagine how intense sales pressure is in the retail world !
